Profile as an Art Educator, Lecturer & Workshop Instructor
About (Educator Statement)
Yoshiyasu Tamura is a rare art educator who combines a proven track record as a top-tier artist with a background in Pedagogy acquired at Gunma University (National University, Faculty of Education, Fine Arts). While many artists expand internationally solely through their artwork, Tamura paved his way into Europe using "Theory" as his strategic foundation. In 2012, he presented a paper comparing Japanese character culture with Western art history at "The Third International Conference on the Image" in Poland. This academic approach established his credibility and led to invitations from universities and public institutions across Europe. Currently, he is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of creators through both practical guidance, such as Masterclasses at Lucca Manga School in Italy, and academic lectures at institutions like Gakushuin University and the University of Florence.
Experience Summary (教育活動の軌跡)
Strategic Academic Approach & Global Recognition
The foundation of Tamura's educational career lies in "The Third International Conference on the Image" held in Poland in 2012. There, he conducted a 90-minute colloquium and presented his paper, "The appearance of virtual characters in real world." By logically explaining Japanese manga and anime culture within the context of Western art history in English, published later in an academic journal, he established a strategic foothold for his expansion into Europe. This unique style of fusing "Theory and Practice" led to a long-term partnership with the Lucca Manga School in Italy since 2015, where he conducts annual "Masterclasses" for aspiring professionals.
Academic Activities at Universities & Public Institutions
Tamura specializes in approaching manga not just as a subculture but from an academic perspective. In 2018, he was invited to Gakushuin University as a guest lecturer for the "Modern Manga Studies" course led by the renowned manga critic Fusanosuke Natsume, lecturing alongside Caterina Rocchi (Founder of Lucca Manga School). Additionally, he has conducted numerous special lectures at higher education institutions worldwide, including the first authentic manga lecture in the Islamic world invited by the Embassy of Japan in Morocco, as well as lectures at the University of Florence and Adam Mickiewicz University.
Performance & Conferences at Major Events
He has been invited as an official guest to world-class events such as the Angoulême International Comics Festival (France), Lucca Comics & Games (Italy), and Japan Expo (Paris). Notably, at Angoulême in 2016, in addition to creating a massive mural live painting, he delivered a special conference at the Main Auditorium (Grande Salle) with Caterina Rocchi. These achievements demonstrate that Tamura is trusted not merely as an artist, but as an educator capable of translating and conveying manga culture to a global audience.
田村の教育活動の根幹は、2012年にポーランドで開催された国際学会「The Third International Conference on the Image」にあります。ここで彼は90分間のコロキウムを行い、論文『The appearance of virtual characters in real world(現実世界へ進出するキャラクター)』を発表。
